Mount Nebo's Church History
(The Church family)
“I am now a member of the Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church family. Hundreds have uttered these words with joy in their hearts. They have found Christ as Savior, their sins are forgiven and there is peace in their souls. As Christians, they have obeyed the Lord’s command to follow Him in baptism and unite with His church; they have found great happiness in this new relationship. History tells us that Mount Nebo was founded and organized August 4, 1871 under a bush harbor. This year the Church will celebrate 149 years of God’s grace, mercy and favor to His people. Today we glorify God’s Holy name and are a witness of His goodness to all of us.

(Love for God and neighbor)
It is important to know that true membership is reflected in our love for one another. This love is displayed through our actions and deeds. Every member should know the sacredness and seriousness of his or her commitment to serving God through our relationship with our brethren and sisters. Along with membership come privileges and opportunities, as well as obligations. Surely, this is not because of a determination to be indifferent. The love of God is reflected in our worship of God in spirit and in truth.

(An example for Jesus Christ)
So this year; we have an opportunity to reflect back on previous accomplishments. Our history challenges us to move forward with enthusiasm and reverence for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is the greatest institution that the world has ever known. Christ established it during his personal ministry, and he is its Head. He promised that he would be with it through the ages and that the gates of hell should not prevail against it. To it he gave the great commission and the ordinances and for it he went to the cross. He loved the church, and he wants his churches to honor and glorify him as His representatives on earth.

(Pastors/Preachers)
To carry out this charge, preachers/pastors were placed here who served their time. The first leader was Rev. John Knight. He along with faithful followers had a vision to erect a church building in 1902. Mt. Nebo first brick building was built June 12, 1988 under the leadership of Rev. Marvin Adams. However, the first plans for this building started under the leadership of Rev. F.L. Blount. There were faithful leaders that served and they include: Rev. Joe Martin; Rev. Tom Sanders; Rev. Gene Powell; Rev. W. M. Carter; Rev. S. H. Jones; Rev. Walter Smith; Rev. M.S. Quitman; Rev. Sorrels; Rev. Fryly, who laid the initial cornerstone, Rev. Irving Taylor; Rev. Hoover; Rev. George Taylor; Rev. Chambers; Rev. Valentine; Rev. L. C. Crook; Rev. Willie Harvey; Rev. F. L. Blount; Rev. Marvin Adams and Rev. Willie F. Mitchell. By the grace of God and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the church under the current leadership of Pastor Darryl D. Phillips, Sr.  has been blessed spiritually. The church has also realized many accomplishments as noted under his leadership. The church has also witnessed an expansion and/or improvements in the departments, ministries and auxiliaries of the church.

(Men of Prayer and Faith)
Acts 6:3 speaks of seven men called deacons. Wherefore brethren, look ye out seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. To name some of these men of prayer and faith: Deacons Jake Bush, Henry Pickett, O’Banner, Lihue Bell, William Wedlaw, Gus Nevels, Sr., Gus Nevels, Jr., Willie Carter, Mose Carter, John Carter, Isaiah Carter, Jim Moten, Lawyer Green, Percy Wedlaw, James “Jimbo” Moore, Charlie Hubbard, Robert O’Banner, Walter Wright, Willie Pickett, George Winford, Sr. and Wilson Green, who lived to be our oldest deacon. We have now serving as Deacons Willie Blackmon, Jr., Washington Cole V, Henry George Collins, Sr., Daniel Haralson, Bobby McInnis, Terry McInnis, T. C. Moore and Sylvester Moten.

(As servants we are here to help others)
Leaders cannot be effective without having faithful and God filled servants in a multitude of capacities. They include Sunday school teachers, superintendents, teachers, ushers, trustees, treasurers, secretaries, janitors, mothers, missionaries and many, many more. Just to recognize a few of the outstanding servants; Sister Minnie Hubbard in which the Minnie Hubbard Educational Fund was established. She was instrumental in initiating funds to pave a parking lot for the church grounds. Mother Willie Ethel Moore lived to be our oldest member at 104 years.

(Carries out the great commission)
Down through the years we have lost or misplaced a part of our church history, but we continue to receive blessings, as the Lord adds to His church. The Lord’s church has the greatest task ever assigned to any individual or group in world’s history, carrying the glorious gospel of Christ the Savior to every nation and tongue. No other commission like that has ever been given or will ever be given. The church has a glorious beginning, a blood written history, an illustrious present, and a future as bright as the promises of God. Membership brings us great opportunities which include fellowship in the finest company that can be found and an opportunity for Christian growth, development, and training through the various departments of church organization. We have an opportunity for Christian service through the church in the name of Christ to those at home and around the globe. Churches are never stronger than their membership. As this chapter in history ends, we have a mandate to feed the hungry, see the sick, clothes the naked, and visit those behind prison bars. Remember, we are under obligation to be the very best members possible
